This guide will walk you through how to set up and run a moderated study in MUiQ.

To set up and run a moderated study on MUiQ, you can utilize the platform's MUiQ Moderated (Mod) feature. This feature is designed for one-on-one or multi-session usability research with live participant video chats, screen sharing, hidden observers, and automated recordings and transcripts.

Here’s a guide on how to set up and run a Moderated study:

  1. Create a Moderated Study:
    1. From your MUiQ dashboard, select "Mod Studies" to view your dashboard. You can then select Create Study to build a new moderated study.

The "Mod Studies BETA" button, indicating a beta feature for moderated studies.
The "+ Create Study" button on the left side, allowing users to start a new study.
A red-highlighted section on the right, containing a sample study titled "Sample Study," with study details such as the owner, status, last update time, creation date, and session count.

  1. Access Session Links:

Once the study is created, you will be presented with various session links: moderator link, observer link, and participant link.

  1. The moderator link can be used by the moderator at the beginning of each session.
  2. The participant link is for sharing with participants.
  3. The observer link is for hidden observers who can monitor the session without being seen by the participant. There is also a hidden observer chat that the participant cannot see.

A Moderator Link with a button labeled "Moderator Lobby" and a corresponding URL.
An Observer Link with a button labeled "Waiting Room" and a corresponding URL.
A Participant Link with a URL.
Each link has a copy icon next to it for easy sharing. The left sidebar contains navigation options: "Information/Settings," "Participant Recruitment," and "Recordings & Transcripts." At the top right, the study status is shown as "Open" with an icon. There is also a close button in the top right corner.

  1. Configure the Moderator Lobby:

At the beginning of each session, the moderator will start in the lobby to name the session.

  1. Use the moderator link OR access the moderator lobby directly from the study to join the moderator lobby.
  2. In the lobby, you can test your camera and microphone, set your name, and enter the lobby to set up your moderated session.
  3. You can give your session a name and see any participants or observers waiting in the waiting room.

  1. Conduct the Moderated Session:

During the session, you have access to several tools:

  1. Observer Chat: For communication among hidden observers, not visible to the participant.
  2. Participant Chat: To communicate directly with the participant. The participant will only see their chat bar.
  3. Screen Sharing: Moderators and Participants can share their screen,
  4. Video and Audio Controls: Moderators and Participants can manage their settings.

On the right side, there are two chat panels: one for "Observer Chat" and one for "Participant Chat," each with an input field for messaging. At the top left, a "Start Recording" button is visible. The bottom toolbar contains various session controls, including buttons for starting video, unmuting, sharing the screen, starting recording, managing the waiting room, monitoring participants in session, and accessing chat. A "End Session" button is located at the bottom right.

  1. End the Session:

Once the session is complete, select "end session". You can then re-enter the lobby for another session or exit to your study dashboard.

In the top right corner, there is a "Study Dashboard" link.

  1. Access Recordings and Transcripts:

MUiQ automatically records sessions and provides transcripts.

  1. After a session, go to the "recordings and transcripts" section in your study dashboard to download them. Note that processing time may be needed before they are available.
  2. Multiple download views may be available, such as gallery view and shared screen view.

  1. Recruit Participants for Moderated Studies:

To recruit participants using MUiQ's services, you need to fill out the Participant Recruitment form in the left menu. This will be sent to the operations team who will handle the recruitment process.

  1. Ensure you clearly outline the target participant criteria when requesting recruitment.
