This article will walk you through how to set up a between-subjects and within-subjects design.
The key difference between a between-subjects and a within-subjects design is:
- Between-Subjects Design: Each participant experiences only one condition.
- Within-Subjects Design: Each participant experiences multiple conditions.
Between-Subjects Design
In a between-subjects design, each participant experiences only one condition. For example, one group of participants might test a website while another group tests a competitor's website.
To set up a between-subjects study in MUiQ:
1. Enable Tasks AND Conditions in Information Settings > Study Design (if not already).
2. View/Edit conditions (e.g., "my website," "my competitor's website").
3. For “Each Participant is Shown:” select "Just One Condition" and assign participants to a condition at random or based on specific criteria.
Within-Subjects Design
In a within-subjects design, each participant experiences multiple conditions. For example, each participant might perform the same task on your website and on a competitor's website.
To set up a within-subjects study in MUiQ:
1. Enable Tasks AND Conditions in Information Settings > Study Design (if not already).
2. View/Edit conditions (e.g., "my website," "my competitor's website").
3. For “Each Participant is Shown:” select "All Conditions".
4. Specify the order of the conditions by choosing either:
- Fully Randomized Order: The order of the conditions will be randomized for each participant. This is typically preferred to help mitigate order effects.
- Listed Order: The conditions will be presented to participants in the order they appear in the list of conditions in MUiQ
Mixed-Subjects Design
MUIQ also allows for a mixed-subjects design, in which each participant completes tasks on your site and then is randomly assigned to complete tasks on just one of your competitors' sites. In this case, you would choose "One Fixed Condition and Another at Random" during Condition set up.
